I came across this article, “Fish ingesting plastic waste, study says”
250 million tons of plastic is produced each year, of that figure, 7 million tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean
In the Pacific Ocean, 24,000 tons of plastic is ingested by fish.
The point the article tries to make is that light plastic is being produced in record numbers and there is not an ecosystem in place to properly recycle plastic. As a result, each day more studies are showing that plastic waste remains a problem. Plastic is recyclable and it should be looked at like any other recyclable material.
The other key point is that plastic is not biodegradeable. Special processing needs to occur to recycle plastic material into oils or recycled plastic. Plastic from a waste perspective needs to be addressed soon to insure that people understand the damaging effects it can have on our environment.
