The research was conducted by scientists at the University of Arizona. 280 samples from 70 kitchen appliances in eight offices. Dr Peter Barratt, Technical Manager at Initial Hygiene, said: ‘Shared office kitchens can be very busy areas with a heavy footfall, making this space a potential hazard for cross-contamination when good hygiene practices and hand washing aren’t encouraged. This study really shows the office kitchen workplace may be an area which people want to take extra precautions in. Because of the sheer volume of traffic and touching of handles on sinks, cabinets and doors, it really indicates that this area is a haven for bacterial growth. Obviously, there are ways to help control the spread of growth.
Here are some ideas to think about and incorporate:
- Wiping off handles of cabinets, water dispensers and appliances like mircrowaves and refrigerators once a week.
- Empty out refrigerator more often, at least once a month
- Make hand sanitizer available in the kitchen area
- Wash hands when entering and exiting the kitchen area
I am sure there are other ways to help fight bacteria in the kitchen area, but these are a few that come to mind. The main thing is at least to do something.
