Plants & Cold WeatherThe Soil Temperatures are extremely cold and it could take some time for proper root development to occur this spring. A check on the latest soil temperature map shows temperatures in the 20’s and 30’s where heavy snowfall has ocurred.  Where snow hasn’t fallen as much, the soil temperatures have remained in the 30’s and 40’s in the midwest up to 60’s and 70’s in the south.

Here is some advice regarding the cold temperatures and some ways to protect your plants from a fast rise in temperatures.

My advice, follow the soil temperatures and start planning when you plant your crops. We are not that far away from spring planting and it will be interesting to see what the weather brings as we head into March.

Finally, I always like checking the Farmer’s Almanac. Find your location and see what the next few months could possibly bring.
